Interchange

Interchange is the domestic and international exchange of transaction data, including authorisation, settlement and other interchange fees as well as other monetary and non-monetary information related to bankcard activities, among banks participating in a bank card network, such as those managed by VISA and MasterCard, according to their operating rules and regulations.

In short it is the exchange of money from the acquiring bank to the issuing bank. It allows a cardholder to access their account from multiple ATMs and to make purchases using their payment cards at any participating merchants.
