Private Label Card

A private label card is a payment card given by VISA or MasterCard to a retailer who in turn gives it to it’s customers, only to be used at that merchant’s retail establishments.

Private label cards are almost like reward cards or store loyalty credit cards and debit cards or even business credit cards. For example, VISA operates a VISA prepaid private label card, which functions just like any other VISA card programme, except that selective authorisation only allows the private label to be used in certain nominated outlets. When using the chip and pin function, the card will either be accepted or declined from different merchants, depending on whether the card may be used there. The private label does not carry the Visa brand.

The advantage to these cards is that they use existing Visa devices and processing infrastructures, so they can be processed in exactly the same way as other credit cards and the same credit card charges apply.
