Card Verification Value (CVV)
A card verification value is a unique value used on a credit card, debit card and automated teller machine (ATM) cards for the purpose of establishing the owner’s identity and minimising the risk of fraud. The card verification
value is calculated from the data encoded on the magnetic stripe of the card and the multi-digit number that is
printed on the card, either a 3-digit number on the back, as with VISA or MasterCard, or a 4-digit number on the front, as with American Express. The code validates the card information during the authorisation process.
