Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
A secure sockets layer (SSL) is a standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a server and a client. An example of a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a web server (website) and a web browser, or an email server and an email client (e.g. Outlook).
SSL allows sensitive information, such as login details or credit card details, to be transmitted securely over the internet and without anyone else being able to see this information. More specifically, SSL is a security protocol. A protocol describes how algorithms should be used and, in this case, the SSL protocol determines variables of the encryption for both the link and the data being transmitted.
SSL security and SSL encryption is important because it secures millions of people’s personal and sensitive details every day.
All browsers have the ability to interact with secured web servers using the SSL protocol. However the browser and the server need what is called an SSL certificate to be able to establish a secure connection. This certificate allows one computer to verify the identity of another and permits the secure connection. Internet users have come to associate their security on websites either with a little padlock in the corner of the web page or a green address bar. SSL secured websites also start with a URL of HTTPS rather than HTTP.
All communications to the NOIRE gateway are SSL protected.
