ACH – Automated Clearing House

ACH or Automated Clearing House is a regional organisation used by member banks for sorting automated payment instructions to allow the transfer of funds electronically between members.

Automated Clearing House’s (ACH) provide a secure payment transfer system that connects financial institutions. The ACH network acts as the central clearing facility for all Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) transactions that occur nationwide, representing a crucial link in the national banking system. It is here that payments linger in something akin to a holding pattern while awaiting clearance for their final banking destination. The ACH system also verifies the availability of funds and the authenticity of the authorisation. The purpose of the system, by conducting these operations, is to facilitate electronic commerce and provide an alternative to cash.

ACH’s are usually country specific and examples are Bacs (UK), CHAPS (UK/Europe), CEC/UCV (Belgium), SIT (France), EMZ (Germany), SIA-SSB (Italy), Interpay/BGC (Netherlands), SICOI (Portugal) and SNCE (Spain).
