Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)

Hypertext Transfer Protocol, or HTTP, defines the way in which World Wide Web pages are transmitted and formatted over the Internet and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands. For example, when you enter a web page into your browser, you enter http:// before the web address, which tells the browser to communicate over HTTP and sends an HTTP request to the Web server directing it to transmit the requested Web page.

HTTP status codes are messages the server returns when trying to process an HTTP request. These can include HTTP error codes, such as the common http 404 error, that a requested web page has not been found.
