Merchant Agreement

A merchant agreement is the written contract between merchant and acquirer, or credit card processor, which detail their respective rights, responsibilities and warranties, with regards to accepting bank cards, the merchant discount rate, chargeback procedures and other disputed transactions.

This merchant agreement allows the merchant to accept credit cards at a physical point of sale using a credit card machine, or to accept online payment processing via a payment gateway, thereby depositing the sum of the transaction into their merchant account.
