Merchant Category Code (MCC)

A Merchant Category Code (MCC) is a classification code which identifies the line of business in which the merchant is engaged by the type of processing, authorisation and settlement it conducts. The merchant category code is a four-digit number assigned to a business by credit card companies when a business starts to accept credit card payments (VISA, MasterCard, American Express) by a credit card machine.

There are approximately 600 different kinds of merchant category code that denote various types of business. For example, if a supplier primarily sells compute hardware, it’s VISA merchant category code may look like MCC 5732 “Computer Hardware”.

As part of their retail merchant services in the USA, credit card companies can use this merchant category code to determine if a payment needs to be reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for tax purposes.
