Modem

A modem is a device that enables a computer to transmit data over telephone or cable lines.

A modem works by computer information being stored digitally and information can only be transmitted along telephone lines in the form of analogue waves. The modem converts between these two forms in order for PCs to send and receive information.

A modem is commonly used to connect a computer to the internet by sending and receiving signals, known as an internet modem. A DSL modem (digital subscriber line) is a device that connects with telephone lines to gain access to the internet. This is known as DSL broadband.

Wireless modems bypass telephone systems and directly connects with a wireless network gaining access to the internet using an ISP (internet service provider).

Cable modems are devices that provide data communication from data frequency channels on a broadband network that combines optical fibre and coaxial cable. These cable modems are used to provide internet access by using cable television infrastructure, which has high bandwidth.

The dial up modem is a dated device and was used widely in 1990’s. This type of modem connects to standard telephone lines, which acts as a data transfer medium, to dial an ISP (internet service provider) number. The ISP will then establish a connection within ten seconds and produces a buzzing sound while doing this.
