Smart Card

A smart card is a plastic card that looks identical in size and shape to an ordinary credit card or swipe card, but instead has a microprocessor embedded for securing card details.

The smart card’s microchip can be read and powered by a card terminal or smart card reader and allows access to the card’s details. This is found under a gold contact pad. The microchip can provide identification and authorisation. Smart cards are most commonly used for credit cards, debit cards, banking, loyalty cards, electronic cash payments, health cards etc.

Smart cards are most popular in Europe, with a recent surge of use in the United States.

A recent update of smart card technology is the contactless smart card. A card that can communicate through Radio Frequency (RF) induction technology – the use of a radio frequency magnetic field to transfer energy – and requires no insertion of the card.
